Blue Java Bananas: Why are they called Ice Cream Bananas?

Blue java bananas are tropical fruits. They originated from South East Asia and spread through continents such as Northern Australia, Hawaii, Central America, and Fiji. They have other names like ice cream banana, Cenizo, and Hawaiian banana.

According to the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers, they have been growing on the island since the early 1920s.

They have a creamy texture and flavor which has a similarity in taste to vanilla custard or ice cream. This makes them an excellent substitute for regular ice cream. Therefore they are called ‘ice cream bananas’.

Like other types, Blue java bananas are a great source of fiber, manganese, and vitamins B6 and C.

Adding them to your diet may offer several health benefits. They promote weight loss and support digestive health. Antioxidants in them help protect against chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Blue Java bananas work well in smoothies or as a topping for oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal.

You can even try adding them in your favorite recipes and desserts, including banana bread, pancakes, muffins, or cookies. Alternatively, try enjoying them raw for a healthy, convenient, and portable snack on the go.
