A new study has found that high fructose corn syrup might promote tumour growth if it is consumed daily. Conducted by researchers from multiple American Universities, it was found that even consuming the fructose corn syrup moderately can cause a big issue.
Consuming equivalent to just one soda per day was found to be dangerous.
“Obesity increases an individual’s risk of developing many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer. One of the factors driving the rise in obesity rates is thought to be the use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener in soft drinks,” the report notes.
It also noted how the syrup can support growth of the tumour.
“Within the tumors, fructose was converted to fructose-1-phosphate, leading to activation of glycolysis and increased synthesis of fatty acids that support tumour growth.”
Though further conclusions are yet to be reached, it is suggested to keep a track on the consumption of such syrups.
