Majuli is a river land island in Assam, India. Located on the well-known Brahmaputra river, the village was recently named the largest riverine island by the Guinness Book of World records.
The people on the Island have been feasting on beetles for some time and the reason is quite interesting. Beetles have been a major problem for the crops on the island and if you haven’t guessed it already, the solution they found is to eat these beetles.
‘Eat them before they eat your crops’ was the slogan for the movement and since beetles as a good source of protein, it made sense to an extent as well. The movement was kick started by Badal Bhattacharya who is a senior scientist at Assam Agricultural University.
