Do you know which food item was used before pumpkins for Halloween?

Another Halloween is here and just like the years that passed by and the years that are yet to come, everyone is in the Halloween spirit this time around as well.

But do you know how it all started?

The idea behind the modern Halloween comes from an Irish festival called Samhain. It marked the transition from summer harvest to dark of winter and it is believed that fairy spirits lurked in the shadows of the fields during this time.

To scare off these spirits and preventing them from settling into houses and farms, the farmers would carve out rudimentary faces into large turnips and set candles near them. When the immigrant wave from Ireland and Scotland hit the United States in the 1800-s. The festival was taken up in the states and instead of turnips; people started carving in faces to pumpkins.
