The next major source of space food could be human waste

Resources in the outer space are scarce. This is why it’s important to make proper use of all the available possibilities. A new breakthrough from the scientists at the Pennsylvania State University has come up with such a great idea which will now allow people to get space food from human waste.

Both solid and liquid waste was used by them to produce protein and fat rich substance. The study was published in the Scientific Journal Life Sciences in Space Research.

“We envisioned and tested the concept of simultaneously treating astronauts’ waste with microbes while producing a biomass that is edible either directly or indirectly, depending on safety concerns,” said Christopher House, professor of geosciences and director of the Penn State Astrobiology Research Center.

The method, however, is not ready for implementation as of now and would require more research.
