Pistachios are not actually nuts, they are seeds from the pistachio tree. They are an excellent source of protein, antioxidants, and fibre. They are a high-fat food.
However, only 2 grams of fat in them is saturated fat. The rest of the fats is polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, which protect the heart.
Pistachios have nutrients like vitamin B6. This is known to promote blood flow by helping to carry oxygen through the bloodstream to cells. It also promotes immune and nervous system health.
They contain antioxidants like vitamin E, polyphenols and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants help decrease the risk of developing macular degeneration.
The seed supports healthy cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that adding it to a healthy diet is very beneficial. It may help to lower levels of oxidized-LDL (bad) cholesterol. This is because of its high level of monounsaturated fat.
Anything that is good also has some side effects. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Raw pistachios don’t have much sodium but that is not true for roasted ones.
