Why wine bottles are stored sideways

The wine bottles are traditionally stored sideways. Though this is a fact that almost every one of us knows, we usually don’t care much about the same.

But actually, there is a science behind why wine bottles are stored sideways.

This is done to keep the liquid up against the cork which in turn keeps the cork from drying out. If the bottles have alternative closures such as plastic corks or glass, this need not be done. Apart from this, the efficiency of horizontal racking is another factor which makes people store wine sideways.
