Checking your phone during dinner can make others miserable, study suggests

It’s now scientifically proven that checking your phone during a meal can make others miserable. The psychology researchers from the University of British Columbia found that people who spend their time on smartphones while eating have a less-enjoyable family time due to the habit.

“As useful as smartphones can be, our findings confirm what many of us likely already suspected. When we use our phones while we are spending time with people we care about—apart from offending them—we enjoy the experience less than we would if we put our devices away.” The lead author notes.

The study was conducted with the help of around 304 participants and their families. In another study which covered 5,000 Americans, it was revealed that 29 percent of the people use smartphones during their meals.
